I saw SHANG-CHI, the latest Marvel movie, on Friday. Ermmm…. I don’t feel compelled to write a long review as it was pretty average. A great fight scene on a tram in the first act – that had an almost Jackie Chan (or Stephen Chow) level of invention, but nothing after that came close to being as good, and it just got increasingly CG-ified as it went on. The final battle just looked like a videogame cutscene.

It’s better than Black Widow, but it’s not great. It’s a shame as there’s real potential for a superhero/martial arts mashup. But so far the best ones I’ve seen are probably the Netflix Marvel shows like DAREDEVIL, which had much more of a visceral, intimate feel to the fights.

The return of Ben Kingsley’s “Trevor Slattery” provided a few comic highlights, but this is ultimately a very forgettable entry in the MCU.

The verdict 5/10 Average
