I got a Shudder subscription to watch LATE NIGHT WITH THE DEVIL (which was excellent) but naturally, I’m using it to watch lots of other decent horror movies. This Argentinian film was recommended to me by a couple of friends, and was indeed very good. It’s hard to describe without spoilers (and it’s best to go in blind) but in a non-spoilery way it’s kind of a mix of John Carpenter’s PRINCE OF DARKNESS, with IT FOLLOWS. A road movie where a family are pursued by a relentless supernatural evil.
It’s got a relatively fresh premise with some interesting world building. There’s a sense that the wider world outside of this story has plenty of tales to tell and I’d actually be interested in seeing sequels/prequels exploring it further. And I can imagine there’ll be a US remake, since mass markets (and to be honest, me!) have an aversion to subtitled films. An English remake wouldn’t even have to invalidate the original film.
There’s some genuinely shocking horror moments in there. It’s not a movie that holds back on what might normally be considered taboo. The characters are generally likeable and relatable, though damn – I really wanted to scream at the main character at the end though. He makes some very bad decisions!
Anyway, a solid horror flick. 7/10
