ALIEN: EARTH is so damn frustrating. I really want to love it – it’s so beautifully made and the cast is really good. The production team did an amazing job of capturing the original aesthetic. And the actual story idea underlying it is pretty solid, with some interesting additions to the ALIEN universe. But then it’s ruined by a script that’s so maddeningly full of nonsensical moments, where characters act so ineptly and without regard to basic common sense, that it reminds me of the “Reg the handyman” sketches from Kenny Everett. They’re so dumb and useless I think I’m actually rooting for the horrible alien monsters.
I’ve been watching it through gritted teeth, hoping it will get better – and in every other way apart from the script, it’s great. But unfortunately – as we saw in Prometheus – a bad script is a terminal thing for movies (and TV!)
But I’d be happy to see the eyeball monster get his own spin-off movie. He’s great! (just so long as the script isn’t written by the same people who did this)
