I saw an excellent horror film at the weekend – HOST. It’s notable in that it was made last year at the beginning of lockdown. It takes place entirely over a Zoom meeting, where a group of friends attempt a seance online, with disastrous and terrifying consequences. That might sound a bit goofy, but it does work really well. The filmmakers make excellent use of the “medium” (haha – unintentional pun, given the subject matter) and there’s some clever use of CG and practical effects – and some great jump scares!
At a breezy 57 minutes, it’s lean and doesn’t outstay its welcome. It almost feels like a long entry in one of those V/H/S anthology films, and is an excellent addition to the found-footage horror genre.
I watched it on Shudder, via Amazon Video. Well worth checking out, if you like a good scare!
